In a landscape where many gas stations have transitioned to new ownership or corporate structures, Carroll Independent Fuel Company stands out as a long-standing family-operated entity. Established in 1907 by Benson Phelps and Carroll Faye in Baltimore, the company began as a coal and wood delivery service before evolving into a fuel provider, a trajectory that continues to this day under the name Carroll Motor Fuels.
The company has maintained its familial roots over the past century, with various members of the Phelps family holding key leadership positions. John Phelps serves as CEO and President, supported by Richard B. Phelps III and C. Howard Phelps in executive vice president roles.
Carroll Independent Fuel is not alone in its family-oriented ownership; Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores also remains under the control of its founding family, now one of the largest privately-held companies in America.
Carroll’s Diverse Branding
In addition to operating under its own name, Carroll Independent Fuel manages a number of stations branded as Sunoco, which is notably associated with the NASCAR Cup Series, as well as BP outlets in collaboration with the British oil company since 2006. The company expanded its operations further in 2012 with the acquisition of High’s, a Maryland-based convenience store chain, acknowledging the growing trend toward increased convenience within the fuel retail sector.
Most recently, Carroll Independent Fuel has broadened its reach by acquiring seven new locations in 2022, expanding its presence beyond Maryland into Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
