Officially categorized as Gemini 3 Pro Image Preview in Google’s technical documentation, Nano Banana emerged as a playful moniker that reflects a more informal aspect of corporate naming conventions.
The naming origins of Nano Banana intertwine with the development of Arena.ai, a platform aimed at crowdsourcing model testing while ensuring anonymity. During the naming process, product manager Naina Raisinghani needed a placeholder name, resulting in the whimsical term ‚Nano Banana.‘ This creative blend stems from a combination of her two nicknames, “Naina Banana” and “Nano,” the latter reflecting her small stature and passion for computing. In her words, “I just mashed up my two nicknames,” she shared on Google’s blog.
Nano Banana Seizes Popularity
Despite initial attempts at anonymity, speculation soon arose that the well-received image generation tool was a Google product. Nano Banana was first uploaded to Arena.ai on August 12, 2025, and within a week, users were actively sharing their AI-generated images across social media. As anticipation built, product lead Logan Kilpatrick hinted at the connection by posting a banana emoji on social media, while Raisinghani shared an image of a banana post-it note. The official launch of Nano Banana took place on August 26, 2025, subsequently overshadowing competitors like ChatGPT in the realm of AI image generation.
This is not the first product in the tech industry to incorporate „banana“ into its name. While Apple, Blackberry, and Raspberry Pi are more widely recognized, options like the Bananaphone, a Bluetooth headset, and the BANANAS algorithm for Bayesian optimization in neural architecture search further illustrate the trend of fruit-inspired naming in technology.
