Luxury automaker Rolls-Royce has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Project Nightingale, a 19-foot-long two-seat convertible that promises to cater to the ultra-wealthy in an era where electric vehicles are increasingly popular among everyday consumers. As gasoline prices soar, this lavish model may further bolster the perception of extravagance in the automotive industry, given its exclusivity and high-end positioning.
The Project Nightingale is fully electric and constructed on a luxury spaceframe architecture similar to that of the company’s flagship Phantom sedan. Unlike the Phantom’s spacious interior, this new model offers seating for only two individuals. The design emphasizes an elongated motor hood and rear, which are intended to make the vehicle’s sizable 24-inch wheels—reportedly the largest ever fitted to a production Rolls-Royce—appear more conventional.
Design Inspirations Rooted in History
For the design of the Project Nightingale, Rolls-Royce drew inspiration from its experimental „EX“ cars from the 1920s, particularly the 16EX and 17EX models. These unique vehicles combined lighter bodies with enhanced horsepower, setting the stage for modern innovations. The 2016 Rolls-Royce 103EX concept represented an even bolder step towards weight reduction, shedding much of the traditional bodywork.
While Project Nightingale presents a more robust aesthetic than its predecessors, it maintains a distinctive presence. It features steeply upright front fenders alongside a minimally adorned grille and sleek, narrow lights. Rolls-Royce describes this design as embodying a „pure, monolithic aesthetic,“ reminiscent of the company’s exclusive Boat Tail model launched in 2021.
Performance specifications for the Project Nightingale have not been disclosed, but anticipation builds around its capabilities. With the existing Rolls-Royce Spectre producing 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, it is expected that this new electric vehicle will offer impressive performance metrics.
Exclusivity and Customization
Attention to detail characterizes the Project Nightingale, featuring a trunk that opens sideways like the wing of a bird. The interior boasts 10,500 embedded stars that light up in flowing patterns inspired by the song of nightingales.
This exclusive model is limited to just 100 units, with prospective buyers invited to purchase by Rolls-Royce itself. As such, the individualizations of these vehicles will depend on the preferences of the invited elite, distinguishing the Project Nightingale from more mainstream offerings like the Cullinan or the Ghost.
